Paediatric Emergency Department, QMC, Nottingham
This project was delivered within a live clinical environment at one of Europe’s busiest Emergency Departments, which sees an average of 550–600 patients daily, around a quarter of whom are aged 16 or under. It involved the complete refurbishment of the existing Children’s Emergency Department alongside the construction of a purpose-built extension housing two emergency resuscitation rooms and four resuscitation bays. Located on a restricted site beneath an existing bridge and along a vital blue-light route, the scheme required careful phasing and coordination to maintain uninterrupted hospital services throughout.
The design was developed in full alignment with Health Building Notes (HBN) and Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) standards, prioritising accessibility and child-centred care. Emphasis was placed on clear circulation, visibility, and rapid response capability, while also creating a calm, supportive environment for children and families during high-stress situations. Wayfinding and public access routes were carefully considered to ensure safety and ease of navigation for both visitors and clinical teams.
