Stirland Ward, Nottingham City Hospital
The former Old Southwell Ward was decommissioned around five years ago and repurposed for storage. In light of the national post-Covid effort to reduce elective surgery waiting times, its refurbishment was reintroduced into the hospital’s strategic plans as part of developing an Elective Surgical Hub. While the new Southwell Ward will not serve as the elective inpatient unit itself, it plays a critical enabling role by making space and capacity available elsewhere on the City Hospital campus for a dedicated 24-bed elective inpatient facility, strategically located to optimise clinical adjacencies and case mix suitability.

The new ward will temporarily house displaced Oncology and Haematology patients and serve as a new centre of excellence for Sickle Cell Anaemia care, benefiting from proximity to other cancer services. This shift allows the Winifred Ward to be repurposed for elective inpatient use. The ward includes a bariatric single room with an enlarged ensuite, and a four-bed bay adapted to accommodate two bariatric patients. The proposal also features two new extensions for support spaces and external plant areas, all constructed in materials consistent with existing hospital architecture and designed to meet modern healthcare standards.
